Itinerary

1
Philae Temple
Your day trip to Aswan from Luxor by car will start with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Luxor. You will travel by car through the scenic Nile Valley, passing by the ancient towns of Edfu and Kom Ombo. The driving time is about four hours, and you will have some stops along the way for refreshments and restrooms. Upon arrival in Aswan, you will meet your guide and driver, who will take you to your first destination: the Philae Temple. This is a charming island temple that was dedicated to the goddess Isis, the mother of Horus and the wife of Osiris. The temple was built during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, and it features various shrines, halls, and columns. The temple was also the last active site of the ancient Egyptian religion, until it was closed by the Byzantine emperor Justinian in the 6th century CE1. The temple was relocated to its current location in the 1970s, to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. You will have the opportunity to explore the temple and see the beautiful reliefs and inscriptions that depict the myths and rituals of Isis and her family. Your guide will explain the history and the significance of this enchanting site, and you will have some free time to take photos and enjoy the island’s scenery.
2
Unfinished Obelisk
Next, you will head to the Unfinished Obelisk, the largest obelisk ever attempted by the ancient Egyptians. The obelisk was commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut, the female pharaoh who ruled Egypt for 22 years in the 15th century BCE. The obelisk was intended to be 42 meters high and weigh 1,200 tons, but it was abandoned in the quarry due to a crack in the granite2. You will see the obelisk lying on its side, partially carved out of the bedrock, and you will learn about the ancient techniques and tools used to shape and transport these massive monuments.
3
Aswan High Dam
After the Unfinished Obelisk, you will visit the Aswan High Dam, the modern engineering marvel that controls the Nile’s flow and creates Lake Nasser, the largest artificial lake in the world. The dam was built between 1960 and 1970, with the help of the Soviet Union, and it has a huge impact on Egypt’s economy, agriculture, and electricity production. The dam also helped to preserve many of the ancient monuments that were threatened by the Nile’s floods, such as the Abu Simbel temples3. You will see the dam’s structure and learn about its functions and benefits, as well as its challenges and controversies. After visiting the dam, you will enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, where you will taste some of the traditional dishes of Egypt, such as koshari, falafel, and shawarma. You will also have the chance to try some of the local drinks, such as hibiscus tea, mint tea, or coffee. At the end of the day, you will travel back by car to Luxor, where you will be dropped off at your hotel, with unforgettable memories of your day trip to Aswan.
